Yes, the Public Health Job Market is Tough, But You’re Tougher!

I know the job market is down. Openings are limited. Rejections come quicker than interview calls. But look around, there are people who are landing jobs. It is not easy, but not impossible either. And yes, you can do it too.

As a recent Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate myself, I have walked this path. I sent in application after application, faced silence, and collected rejection emails like souvenirs every day. But each “no” became my fuel to get better. Let me share some powerful, actionable strategies and a Job Application Checklist that helped me and can help you too.

Public Health Job Application Checklist for MPH Graduates:

  1. Start with a Growth Mindset
  • Do not take rejection personally.
  • Ask: What can I learn from this?
  1. Pause and Reflect After Each Rejection
  • This is something I always did. I didn’t rush to apply for the next job.
  • I paused. I reflected. Why might I have been rejected?
  • Did I tailor my resume well enough?
  • Did my cover letter truly reflect why I am the right fit for this specific role?
  • Do I know who got hired? If so, what did they have that I didn’t showcase?
  1. Customize Every Application
  • Treat each public health job uniquely.
  • Rewrite your resume and cover letter from scratch if needed.
  • Use the exact language from the job description (where appropriate) and connect your experience directly to their needs.
  • Avoid applying to multiple roles within the same department at the same organization.
  1. Show Enthusiasm, Even When You’re Drained
  • They do not know how many jobs you have been rejected from.
  • But they do want to see energy, purpose, and what you bring to the table.
  • Show how your resources, skills, ideas, and lived experiences can benefit them.
  1. Highlight Impact and Measurable Achievements
  • Instead of “assisted with health promotion event,” say “designed a health promotion campaign reaching 300+ community members with a 75% satisfaction rate.”
  • Clearly connecting the actual experience to the role’s requirements.
  1. Network with Purpose
  • Don’t just connect, start conversations.
  • Informational interviews are golden. Many public health jobs are sometimes never posted publicly.
  1. Be Ready to Talk in the Interview
  • Practice talking about your accomplishments with clarity and confidence.
  • Prepare at least five STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories in advance to confidently tackle behavioral interview questions.
  1. Stay Organized
  • Track where you have applied, interview dates, contacts, and follow-up tasks.
  1. Do not Let Comparison Steal Your Momentum
  • Everyone’s journey looks different.
  • Focus on building your lane. It will pay off.
  • Keep a Rejection Ritual

Whether it’s journaling, a 10-minute walk, or talking to a mentor, acknowledge your feelings and move forward. You are not alone. There were weeks when even the thought of opening my email filled me with dread. Sometimes, even in the middle of the night, I wake up anxious, bracing myself for yet another rejection that felt heavier than the last. But when I started taking each application uniquely and strategically, things began to shift. I realized that job hunting in public health is not just about applying; it is about storytelling, connection, and alignment.

Public health employers aren’t just hiring a resume they are hiring you. Your perspective. Your energy. Your commitment to community health. So take a breath. Reset. Rework your resume. Bring fresh energy to your next application. Remember, you are closer than you think.

You’ve got this. One role, one revision, one win at a time.
